Manage holiday sales with Happy Returns’ new Final Sale functionality

This blog highlights new functionality for merchants to control returns for items designated as “final sale” that cannot be returned. This functionality is especially timely as merchants head into holiday sales, where deep discounting is common.

Does this scenario sound familiar when designating products as final sale?

You discount items for a short window of time – perhaps even just a few hours for an Instagram flash sale – and then the products either return to full price when the sale ends or are discontinued altogether. You don’t want to allow items that were purchased during the sale to be available for return, but will accept returns and exchanges from shoppers who paid full price outside of the sale window. How do you differentiate which items can be returned when eligibility is tied to purchase date or time?

Before today, you simply couldn’t. Most eCommerce platforms do not provide return-window management, forcing merchants to either accept returns on sale items or mark them all as final sale forever, without giving customers who paid full price the ability to return.

Introducing a new feature to prevent returns from shoppers who purchased an item on sale, and allow them for those who paid full price

To alleviate this problem, we built a feature that allows merchants to define return eligibility based on the purchase date and time. In simple terms, if an item was purchased during a time frame specified as final sale it cannot be returned.  Any purchase of the same item outside of that window is subject to the merchant’s normal return policy.

Benefits of this new functionality

This new feature yields multiple benefits, including:

  1. Reduced customer service calls - All final sale use cases can now be handled in your returns portal, rather than requiring a call to customer service.

  2. Less exception handling - With policy enforced by software, not people, there are no judgement calls to make.

  3. Reduced returns - Enjoying the deep discounts associated with sales means shoppers may need to trade off benefits like being able to return. Now it’s easy to designate items as Final Sale and know they will stay sold, reducing your returns.
